Built around what iRobot describes as a two-step hot mopping system, the Roomba Plus 678 Combo combines AI-powered floor pre-treatment with hot-water roller scrubbing. Its SprayForce AI technology applies a concentrated burst of high-pressure spray to loosen stuck-on messes before the PowerSpin™ roller mop scrubs the floor, creating a cleaning process designed to address everything from dried food spills and kitchen splatters to tracked-in dirt and everyday grime.
The system delivers up to 40,000 Pa of high-pressure spray, which iRobot says can improve cleaning efficiency by up to 40%, helping break down stubborn residue before the mopping stage begins.
Two-Step Hot Mopping Tackles Stubborn Floor Messes
At the heart of the Roomba Plus 678 Combo is its self-cleaning PowerSpin™ roller mop, which continuously scrubs hard floors using water heated to 140°F (60°C) and up to 15 Newtons of downward pressure.

The combination of pre-treatment and hot-water scrubbing is designed to lift dried-on stains, footprints, food residue and everyday dirt while helping produce a cleaner, streak-free finish.
Rather than relying solely on repeated passes over a dirty area, the robot can identify challenging messes and adjust its cleaning approach accordingly, helping concentrate cleaning power where it is needed most.
Stronger Vacuuming and Deeper Carpet Pickup
The Roomba Plus 678 Combo isn’t limited to hard-floor cleaning. The robot features 4x stronger suction¹ and SealForce™ Technology, designed to improve debris pickup on carpets.
When carpet is detected, the robot automatically lifts its roller mop by 10 mm to help keep rugs dry. At the same time, SealForce™ Technology creates a sealed brush zone with concentrated suction to help pull deeply embedded dust, hair, pet fur, litter, kibble and other debris from carpet fibers.
For households with pets, the robot also incorporates a hair-cutting multi-surface bristle brush and an anti-tangle Edge-Sweeping brush designed to reduce hair wrap and minimize brush maintenance.
Designed to Clean Along Edges and Under Furniture
Cleaning performance extends beyond the center of a room. PerfectEdge® Technology extends the roller by up to 45 mm, allowing the robot to reach closer to edges and baseboards.
An Edge-Sweeping brush also works along walls and into corners to capture dust and debris that can otherwise accumulate in hard-to-reach areas.
Measuring just 9.95 cm in height, the robot is designed to navigate beneath furniture while also handling thresholds of up to 3.5 cm, helping it move between rooms and different areas of the home.
AutoWash™ Dock Delivers Up to 90 Days of Hands-Free Maintenance
One of the Roomba Plus 678 Combo’s biggest conveniences is its AutoWash™ dock, which is designed to automate much of the maintenance typically associated with robot mopping.
The dock uses an 176°F (80°C) hot-water soak to clean the PowerSpin™ roller fibers, while a scraper removes dirty water and grease. The dock then rinses itself with clean water and flushes away wastewater.
After washing, 131°F (55°C) heated-air drying helps keep the roller fresh and reduce odors.
The robot also automatically empties dry debris into a sealed bag designed to trap debris and odors for up to 90 days of hands-free maintenance, reducing the need for frequent emptying and cleaning.
AI-Powered Navigation and Mess Recognition
The Roomba Plus 678 Combo uses ClearView™ Pro Dual-Line LiDAR to create detailed 3D maps of the home, helping it navigate efficiently from room to room.
Its PrecisionVision™ AI is designed to recognize and avoid common household obstacles such as toys, cords and pets. Beyond navigation, the AI vision system can identify different types of messes, including solid debris, liquids and stubborn stains.
Based on what it detects, the robot can automatically adjust suction and brush speed and activate pressurized spray when additional floor treatment is required.
This adaptive approach is designed to let the Roomba Plus 678 Combo respond differently to a pile of debris, a liquid spill or a dried-on stain rather than applying the same cleaning routine to every surface.
Smart Cleaning Based on Dirt, Rooms and Floor Types
The robot also incorporates Advanced Dirt Detect™ Technology, which identifies areas requiring additional attention and automatically responds by increasing suction, repeating cleaning passes or activating additional mopping and pre-treatment.
The system can recognize room types, floor materials and pet activity areas to customize cleaning behavior. It can increase pickup performance in areas prone to hair, litter and food debris and clean higher-dirt rooms later in the cleaning cycle to help reduce the risk of spreading debris between areas.
A More Automated Approach to Everyday Cleaning
With its combination of high-pressure AI pre-treatment, hot-water roller scrubbing, powerful carpet vacuuming, edge cleaning, obstacle recognition and automated dock maintenance, the iRobot Roomba Plus 678 Combo robot + AutoWash™ dock is positioned as an all-in-one solution for households looking to spend less time dealing with everyday floor cleaning.
From dried spills and tracked-in dirt to pet hair and deeply embedded carpet debris, the system is designed to identify the type of mess and automatically adapt its cleaning strategy—while the AutoWash™ dock handles much of the routine maintenance afterward.
The result is a more hands-off approach to vacuuming and mopping, bringing multiple cleaning technologies together in one automated home-cleaning system.
