We were excited to see how the L40 Ultra performs against the competition. Unboxing and Setup
Opening the box, you’ll find the Dreame L40 Ultra robot, a multi-purpose cleaning station with ramp and separate power cord, mop pads (pre-installed), a bottle of cleaning solution, a spare dust bag, a multi-purpose cleaning tool, and the usual product literature. Setup is straightforward. Simply plug in the dock, attach the magnetic mop pad holders, fill the clean water tank, add the cleaning solution, and charge the robot. Once it’s charged, connecting it to the Dreame Home app gets you ready to start cleaning almost immediately.
Design and Navigation
The L40 Ultra follows the familiar design language of Dreame’s L-series, with subtle updates to its finish and trim. On the front, it’s equipped with a single-line laser sensor system combined with RGB AI and LED sensors for navigation. During testing, mapping was fast, and the robot moved smoothly and precisely throughout the home. A firmware update was available immediately after setup, and we recommend installing it right away to ensure optimal performance.
The robot comes with a side brush that extends, a single rubber roller brush, and compatibility with Dreame’s Tricut Brush, which is particularly useful for homes with pets or long hair. While rubber rollers can accumulate hair at the ends, the removable caps make cleaning the roller straightforward and quick.
Suction and Cleaning Performance
Despite being over a year old, the L40 Ultra delivers impressive suction performance, pulling in 11,000 Pa, which is above the average for robot vacuums. At maximum suction, it produces 78 dB of noise, slightly louder than average, but switching to a lower setting makes it noticeably quieter. Its maximum feet-per-minute (FPM) speed reached 512, the highest we’ve seen from a Dreame vacuum, though carpet airflow measured slightly below average at 396 FPM. This was reflected in its carpet deep cleaning score of 85 out of 100, a touch below the average of 88. Peak suction pressure reached 33 kPa.
These numbers show that suction alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Real-world performance is influenced by factors like roller design, floor type, and navigation efficiency. On hard floors, the L40 Ultra easily handled hair, crumbs, and fine dust, while carpets posed more of a challenge, as is common with most robot vacuums.
Mopping Capabilities
The L40 Ultra’s dual rotary mop pads performed exceptionally well, leaving luxury vinyl plank (LVP) floors clean and streak-free. The cleaning station automates virtually the entire mopping process, washing the pads with hot water (149°F), dispensing cleaning solution, and drying them with hot air. Mop lift is standard at 10.5 mm, preventing wet pads from touching carpets, but the real innovation lies in the robot’s ability to automatically detach and reattach mop pads at the base. The pads also extend slightly on one side, allowing the robot to reach deeper into corners and along furniture edges.
One feature we noticed missing is ozone water treatment, which could help prevent musty odors from developing in standing water tanks. However, even without it, the automated mopping system significantly reduces maintenance and makes keeping floors clean much more convenient.
Dreame Home App
The Dreame Home app, available for both iOS and Android, gives you full control over the robot. It allows you to fine-tune both vacuuming and mopping settings, build custom cleaning routines, and target specific rooms or zones. It also supports multi-floor mapping, no-go zones, and voice control through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. For those who like a high level of control, the app even offers a built-in voice assistant and live video monitoring.
Among its standout features are intensive carpet cleaning, off-peak charging, side brush activation for carpets, and real-time maintenance tracking. While the app may take a little time to learn due to its depth, it is one of the most thoughtfully designed and feature-rich platforms we’ve tested, which makes Dreame our top overall pick.
Real-World Feedback
Customer reviews for the Dreame L40 Ultra have been largely positive, averaging 4.2 stars. Users frequently praise its strong vacuuming and mopping performance, smooth navigation, and the convenience of automated features like hot water mop washing, mop lifting, and auto-empty docking. Some users note occasional missed spots, inconsistent debris pickup, or minor issues with carpet detection, but these complaints are relatively rare.
Reddit users echo this sentiment, highlighting the robot’s advanced navigation and effective mopping as key strengths. Overall, the consensus is that the L40 Ultra is a capable, feature-rich robot vacuum that performs well as long as a few software quirks are tolerated.
Observed Limitations
During our testing, we did notice some limitations. Carpet obstacle avoidance can be inconsistent, with the robot occasionally running over cords or small toys. Mapping on carpets was slightly incomplete in one test, and live video monitoring showed minor lag, though this may be related to network speed or other external factors. Additionally, the L40 Ultra lacks some advanced features found in higher-end models, such as retractable LAR, silver ion modules, UV light, or electrolyzed water treatment.
Floor type plays a major role in performance. Hard floors are handled with ease, while carpets occasionally presented challenges, particularly in homes with dense or high-pile rugs.
Final Verdict
The Dreame L40 Ultra offers a practical balance of automation, cleaning performance, and convenience. It handles most cleaning tasks with ease and includes features such as auto-emptying, hot water mop washing, and detachable mop pads, which make maintenance far easier than with other robots.
