Dyson V15 Detect Review: One of the Best Cordless Vacuums We’ve Tested

The Dyson V15 Detect has earned a reputation as one of the best cordless stick vacuums on the market, and after spending time testing it ourselves, it’s easy to see why. Available in several configurations—including the Origin, Plus, Extra, Absolute, and Total Clean Extra—the V15 can be purchased with varying accessory packages depending on your needs. For this review, we tested the Total Clean Extra model, which includes the largest collection of attachments Dyson offers.

Although this is only the second Dyson cordless vacuum we’ve reviewed, we’ve tested more than 30 cordless vacuums overall, giving us plenty of points of comparison. We were eager to find out whether the V15 truly lives up to its reputation.

Unboxing and Setup

The Total Clean Extra certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to included accessories. Inside the box, you’ll find the vacuum body with its removable battery pre-installed, the extension wand, Dyson’s Digital Motorbar cleaner head, the Fluffy Optic cleaner head with its signature green illumination, and a wide selection of specialty tools for dusting, upholstery, crevices, mattresses, and more. The package is completed by a wall-mounted charging dock and charger.

Setup is refreshingly simple. Once the wall dock is installed—if you choose to use it—the vacuum components click together easily, and after giving the battery a full charge, the V15 is ready to go. It’s exactly the kind of straightforward setup you’d expect from a premium cordless vacuum.

Design and Build Quality

The Dyson V15 makes an excellent first impression. The materials feel premium, the engineering is refined, and every component has the polished appearance that has become synonymous with Dyson products. It feels like a high-end appliance from the moment you pick it up.

That premium construction does come with one trade-off, however. Compared to many cordless vacuums we’ve tested, the V15 is noticeably heavier. While the extra weight contributes to its solid feel, it’s something users may notice during longer cleaning sessions, particularly when vacuuming stairs or using the vacuum above floor level.

One design decision we were especially happy to see is Dyson’s use of a removable battery. This not only makes battery replacement much easier down the road, but it also allows users to purchase a second battery if they regularly need more than an hour of cleaning time. Considering a full recharge takes approximately four hours, having the option to swap batteries is a welcome convenience.

Another standout feature is the LCD display. Rather than simply showing battery life, it provides genuinely useful information, including the selected cleaning mode, maintenance reminders, remaining runtime, and even a live particle counter that tracks the amount of debris being collected. It’s one of the most informative displays we’ve seen on any cordless vacuum, and the real-time runtime estimate proved to be remarkably accurate throughout our testing.

Not every design choice is perfect, though. Like most Dyson cordless vacuums, the V15 uses a trigger that must be held continuously while vacuuming. Some users won’t mind, but we would have preferred a trigger lock or continuous power mode to reduce hand fatigue during extended cleaning sessions.

We were also disappointed that the vacuum still cannot stand upright on its own. While this isn’t unusual among Dyson cordless models, it’s a convenience feature offered by several competing brands. Being able to briefly park the vacuum without leaning it against furniture or a wall makes everyday cleaning noticeably easier, and it’s something we’d love to see Dyson incorporate in future generations.

Performance

Performance is where the Dyson V15 truly earns its reputation.

With a rated motor output of 545 watts, it delivers significantly more power than the average cordless vacuum in our database, which sits at 297 watts. In fact, it’s the second most powerful cordless vacuum we’ve tested, trailing only the Dreame R20.

Those specifications translate into equally impressive performance numbers. We measured peak suction at 30 kPa, well above our cordless vacuum average of 22 kPa. More importantly, the V15 produced the highest in-use carpet airflow and carpet pressure we’ve ever recorded, measuring 1,421 FPM and 7.51 kPa, respectively. For comparison, the next closest model in our testing database, the Dreame R20, measured 1,273 FPM and 4.97 kPa.

As impressive as those laboratory measurements are, what matters most is how they translate into real-world cleaning. In our deep-clean carpet testing—which involves embedding coffee grounds, sand, and cat litter into carpet fibers before measuring how much each vacuum removes—the Dyson V15 achieved perfect scores across every test. It consistently removed debris that many other cordless vacuums leave behind.

One feature that contributes to those results is the three-position gate adjustment on the Digital Motorbar cleaner head, allowing airflow to be tuned for different carpet conditions. The downside, however, is that the V15 creates such a strong seal against carpet that pushing it can require noticeably more effort, particularly on thicker or higher-pile carpeting. It’s a trade-off that many buyers will gladly accept for the outstanding cleaning performance, but it’s worth mentioning.

Battery life is equally impressive. Dyson rates the V15 for up to 60 minutes of runtime, which is slightly above average for the category. As with every cordless vacuum, actual runtime varies depending on the selected power mode, flooring, and attachments, but we found the estimates provided by the LCD display to be among the most accurate we’ve encountered.

Noise levels peaked at 87 decibels on the highest power setting, placing the V15 almost exactly in line with the average cordless vacuum we’ve tested. While it’s certainly audible when running at full power, it isn’t unusually loud considering the amount of airflow and suction it’s producing.

Hair Pickup and Everyday Use

Another area where the Dyson V15 impressed us was hair pickup. Its anti-tangle brush roll performed exceptionally well during both our controlled hair-wrap testing and extended real-world use, with very little hair becoming wrapped around the brush. For households with pets or long-haired family members, this feature alone can significantly reduce maintenance and cleanup.

The V15 is also highly versatile thanks to its extensive selection of included attachments. Switching from floor cleaning to dusting furniture, vacuuming upholstery, or cleaning tight spaces is quick and intuitive, and the vacuum converts into a handheld unit in just seconds.

Ironically, the only drawback of receiving so many accessories is finding somewhere to store them. While Dyson includes a wall dock, it doesn’t have enough storage capacity for every attachment included with the Total Clean Extra package, so you’ll likely need an additional storage solution for the extras.

What Could Be Better?

As impressive as the Dyson V15 is, there are still a few areas we’d like to see improved.

The Fluffy Optic cleaner head features Dyson’s excellent green illumination, which makes fine dust on hard floors remarkably easy to see. Unfortunately, that lighting system isn’t included on the main Digital Motorbar cleaner head, making it more difficult to spot debris while vacuuming carpet. We’d also like to see the green illumination itself made slightly brighter for better visibility in well-lit rooms.

Beyond that, our wishlist remains fairly short: a trigger lock for longer cleaning sessions, the ability for the vacuum to stand upright on its own, and perhaps a slight reduction in weight. None of these issues detract significantly from the vacuum’s performance, but they would make an already outstanding product even more enjoyable to use.

Final Verdict

The Dyson V15 Detect delivers exactly what its reputation promises. It offers premium build quality, exceptional engineering, and some of the strongest cleaning performance we’ve measured from any cordless vacuum. Its class-leading suction, industry-leading carpet performance, effective anti-tangle brush roll, informative LCD display, and versatile accessory package make it one of the most capable cordless vacuums currently available.

While we’d still like to see a few quality-of-life improvements in future models, they’re relatively minor complaints in the context of an otherwise exceptional machine.

If you’re shopping for a high-end cordless stick vacuum and cleaning performance is your top priority, the Dyson V15 Detect is an easy recommendation. Simply put, it’s one of the best cordless vacuums we’ve tested.
