How Our Robot Vacuum Comparison Tool Works (And Why You Control the Rankings)

One of the questions we get most often is:

“How do you decide which robot vacuum is the best?”

The short answer is: you do.

Unlike traditional “Top 10” lists, our comparison tool lets you decide what matters most. Every home is different, so instead of forcing everyone into the same rankings, we give you control over how each vacuum is scored.

Every Vacuum Is Tested the Same Way

Every robot vacuum in our database goes through the same standardized testing process. We measure things like:

  • Carpet cleaning performance (coffee, sand, and cat litter)
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • Mopping performance
  • Suction power
  • Airflow
  • Carpet pressure
  • Battery life
  • Cleaning efficiency
  • Noise levels

Some of these are real-world performance tests, while others are objective specifications or lab measurements.

We Convert Everything to the Same Scale

The challenge is that these measurements all use different units.

  • Suction is measured in Pascals (Pa)
  • Battery life is measured in minutes
  • Noise is measured in decibels
  • Cleaning tests are scored out of 100

To compare them fairly, every category is converted to the same 0-100 scale.

For categories like suction, battery life, airflow, and cleaning efficiency, we normalize the results so they can be compared fairly across every robot in our database. To prevent one or two extreme outliers from skewing the rankings, we use percentile-based normalization rather than simply comparing the absolute highest and lowest values. This keeps the scores more representative of how the vast majority of robot vacuums perform.

For noise, lower is better, so quieter vacuums receive higher scores.

You Decide What’s Important

This is where the tool becomes unique.

Each category has its own slider. Move a slider higher and that category has more influence on the overall ranking. Move it lower and it has less influence.

For example:

  • If you have lots of carpet, you might increase Carpet Cleaning and Suction.
  • If you have pets, you may prioritize Obstacle Avoidance and Mopping.
  • If you live in an apartment, Noise Level might be more important.

As you adjust the sliders, the rankings update instantly.

There is no hidden formula that favors one brand over another. The rankings simply reflect the priorities you choose.

What Happens If Data Is Missing?

Not every robot vacuum has been tested in every category.

Instead of ignoring missing data or treating it as a zero, we assume an average score for that category.

In other words, missing data is treated as if the vacuum scored right in the middle of the pack.

This approach prevents missing information from unfairly helping or hurting a vacuum’s ranking. It also avoids giving older or less-tested models an artificial advantage.

How the Overall Score Is Calculated

Behind the scenes, the tool calculates a weighted average.

Each category contributes to the final score based on:

  1. How well the vacuum performs in that category.
  2. How important you said that category is by adjusting its slider.

If all sliders are equal, every category contributes equally.

If you increase the Suction slider, suction performance becomes a much larger part of the final score. If you lower Noise, it has less influence.

The overall ranking is simply the combination of all those weighted scores.

No “Best Vacuum” Exists

The reality is that there isn’t one robot vacuum that’s perfect for everyone. A family with pets has different priorities than someone living in a small apartment with hardwood floors, which is exactly why we built this tool.

Instead of telling you what we think is best, we provide standardized testing data and let you customize the rankings to fit your home and your priorities. Our goal isn’t to tell you which robot vacuum to buy. It’s to give you the data and the flexibility to make the best decision for yourself.

Of course, if you’d rather skip the customization and see which models we personally recommend, we’ve got you covered. Check out our current top picks here!
