Vacuuming Performance

One of the biggest strengths of the Roomba Combo j9+ is its vacuuming performance. It utilizes iRobot’s proven dual rubber brush system paired with a single side brush, allowing it to clean both hard floors and carpets effectively.

During our testing, the j9+ performed noticeably better than the average robot vacuum. It handled everything from fine dust and debris to larger particles with ease, delivering consistently strong cleaning results across multiple floor types.

A major upgrade over previous generations is the increased suction power. iRobot claims the j9+ offers 100% more suction than the Roomba i Series. While our testing didn’t reveal quite that dramatic of an improvement, there was certainly a noticeable boost in cleaning performance compared to older Roomba models.

Innovative Mopping System

The Roomba Combo j9+ features iRobot’s unique auto-retract mopping system, which remains one of the most innovative mopping solutions available.

Using stainless steel arms, the robot lowers the mop pad when cleaning hard floors, allowing it to vacuum and mop simultaneously. When carpet is detected, the mop pad automatically lifts and rests on top of the robot, keeping carpets completely dry.

Many competing robot vacuums offer mop-lifting functionality, but those systems typically raise the mop only a few millimeters above the carpet surface. In some situations, that can still leave carpets slightly damp. The j9+ avoids this issue entirely by lifting the mop pad completely away from the floor.

More recently, some competing models have introduced systems that automatically detach and reinstall mop pads at the docking station. While those solutions may be even more effective, iRobot’s approach remains highly practical and allows the robot to vacuum and mop in a single pass, reducing overall cleaning time.

Mopping Performance

Mopping performance was another highlight during testing. The Roomba Combo j9+ handled both wet and dried-on stains surprisingly well, leaving floors noticeably cleaner after each run.

Its SmartScrub feature proved especially effective on stubborn messes. When activated, the robot makes multiple back-and-forth passes over problem areas, mimicking the scrubbing motion you would use when cleaning by hand. This extra attention helps remove tougher stains that many robot mops would leave behind.

Obstacle Avoidance

The j9+ also includes built-in obstacle avoidance technology. Using front-mounted sensors, it can identify and navigate around many common household obstacles, reducing the likelihood of getting stuck during a cleaning cycle.

While obstacle avoidance is not perfect, it performs better than many systems found on average robot vacuums. It does a particularly good job avoiding cords, shoes, and pet-related obstacles.

iRobot is so confident in its pet waste avoidance capabilities that it offers its well-known Pet Owner Official Promise (P.O.O.P.). If the robot fails to avoid solid pet waste, iRobot will replace the unit.

Clean Base Auto-Fill Dock

Perhaps the standout feature of the Roomba Combo j9+ is its Clean Base Auto-Fill Dock.

The dock automatically empties the robot’s dustbin into a disposable bag and refills the onboard water tank used for mopping. The water reservoir in the dock is large enough to provide roughly a month of hands-free mopping before needing a refill.

The dock itself is also one of the better-looking options available. Its faux wood top and built-in storage compartments for spare bags and mop pads help it blend into a home environment while adding practical storage.

Areas for Improvement

Despite its impressive performance, the Roomba Combo j9+ isn’t without shortcomings.

The most notable omission is automatic mop washing. At this price point, most competing robot vacuums include self-cleaning mop systems that wash and sometimes dry the mop pads after each cleaning session.

With the j9+, users must manually remove and wash the mop pad. iRobot originally stated that this decision was made for sanitary reasons, but the later release of the Roomba Combo 10 Max—which does include automatic mop washing—suggests this feature was simply missing from the j9+.

Navigation speed is another area where competitors have an advantage. While the robot eventually maps and cleans effectively, it takes longer to create initial maps and generally moves more slowly through its environment compared to many modern LiDAR-based robot vacuums.

If rapid mapping and fast cleaning cycles are important to you, the j9+ may feel somewhat sluggish in comparison.

App Experience

The iRobot app remains feature-rich and easy to use. It includes useful customization options such as Keep Out Zones, Dirt Detective recommendations, room-specific cleaning preferences, and adjustable water and suction settings.

However, the app isn’t quite as intuitive as some competing platforms. One particularly noticeable omission is the lack of real-time robot location tracking on the map while cleaning. Being unable to watch the robot’s progress live can be frustrating, especially for users accustomed to more advanced mapping interfaces.

Final Verdict

Overall, the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ is an excellent premium robot vacuum and mop combination. Its vacuuming performance is among the best we’ve seen from a Roomba, and the dual rubber brushes continue to excel at handling both human and pet hair without tangling.

The retractable mopping system remains one of the most clever and effective solutions in the industry, allowing the robot to clean hard floors and carpets confidently in a single run.

While it lacks some premium features now commonly found in competing models—including automatic mop washing and drying, mop extension for edge cleaning, and faster navigation—it still delivers outstanding overall cleaning performance.

For buyers looking for a high-end robot vacuum with strong carpet cleaning, reliable mopping, and one of the most effective carpet-protection systems available, the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ remains a strong contender.
